Venues are advertised prior to each school holidays in the NT News and on Councils Website. Also, programs can be collected from any of Council’s four public libraries or the Customer Service Section at the Civic Centre.

Dig deep for our Bush fire victims in the south.

I would like to urge all Territorians to find a dollar or 50 to help ease some of the suffering caused from the devastation bushfires in NSW and Victoria. While are lapping up all our rain, our southern cousins have been batting record temperatures and the resulting bushfires. As I write this, 131 have died in the fires and countless homes and livelihoods destroyed.

Casuarina sub-station likened to a cyclone watch?

Residents in the Northern suburbs have been been warned to treat the next few weeks as though there was a cyclone coming, to stock up on non perishables and even gone so far as to advise us to outlay money for a generator. Are we in Australia or some third world country?

Come on Power and Water, come on the Federal and State governments. We watched the progress of all theĀ  the underground power cables being laid to better inprove the services and you allow substations to continue with archaic equipment.

“Make sure you have a radio with battery power. In the event of a major power failure, the ABC will broadcast important information and advice. This advice will depend on the nature of the outage and the estimated length of time to get the power back on.

If you have a gas barbecue, make sure the gas bottle is full.

If the power is out for a prolonged period, you should consider staying with friends in unaffected areas. While this is not absolutely necessary, you may find this more comfortable.

If you have a camping-type generator or can borrow one, now is a good time to make sure it is in working order and that you have enough fuel.”

More Power outages expected

Just listening to the news on TV and Power and water have stated that they can’t guarantee there won’t be more outages, but have said to expect a major outage at anytime. Conditions at the substation are critical and, although they have ordered backup generators from interstate, they won’t arrive for four weeks.

There is also a risk of a major explosion rendering all 15,000 homes and businessesĀ  without power indefinitely.

How on earth can they let things go so far that it is in a critical state? There will be a lot of heads rolling if it gets to that stage. It is bad enough that we have had two long periods without power over the last two weeks, but knowing there is a risk of it being irreparable is outright ludicrous!

I guess if anyone was considering buying a generator, now might be a good to to invest!
